Art Design Ideas writes about designed objects, the people who made them, and the arguments built into them. Some of our articles recommend things to buy. This page explains how we choose them, what we will not link to, and how we make money from the links we do include.

Who writes here

ADI is written and edited by Joe Post and Zoe Post. Joe holds an MFA in Art from California Institute of the Arts; Zoe holds a BFA and a Master of Architecture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Originals, not copies

Many of the designs we write about, from the Eames Lounge Chair to the Barcelona Chair to the Louis Ghost, are widely copied. We do not recommend or link to replicas, knockoffs or other unlicensed copies of designed objects, and we do not link to unlicensed prints of artworks that are still in copyright.

When we recommend a product, the link goes to one of these:

  • the company that makes the design under license, or one of its authorized dealers
  • a museum shop or other seller of licensed art prints
  • a book
  • a product with its own design that does not imitate anyone else’s

Where an article discusses a famous design, we name the licensed maker and give its current price, with the month we checked it. When the original is out of reach, we point to the secondhand market and explain how to recognize an authentic piece. How we choose products

A product earns a place in an article because of its design: what it is made of, how it is made, and whether it holds up as an object you will live with. We check that a product is in stock from the seller we link to when we write or update a guide, and we remove links that have gone dead or changed to something else. We do not accept payment to include a product, and no manufacturer reviews our articles before publication.

How we make money

ADI is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. Links marked as sponsored may earn us a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. Many links on this site earn us nothing, including most links to manufacturers, dealers and museum shops. Whether a link pays is never the reason a product is included. Accuracy and corrections

We cite sources for dates, attributions and prices, and we date every price we quote because prices change. If you find an error, a dead link, or a product we link to that turns out to be a copy, please tell us. We correct factual errors promptly.
